On the main wall of the first gallery, below a series of frames containing the life story of the Bodhisattva (Lalitawistara), there is a series of relief frames called Awadana (Stories of Great Virtue). Awadana contains the story of the birth of the Bodhisattva and His disciples. One of them is the story of Maitrakanyaka which is in the 106th to 112th relief frame from the east door of the temple.

The story of Maitrakanyaka is sourced in the Sanskrit Tripitaka (Diwyawadana). This story tells about the overseas Maitrakanyaka pursuing his personal ambitions, without thinking about his mother's feelings. As a result he met the unfortunate fate and learned a valuable lesson that a child should be devoted to his parents more than any worldly achievement.
