Doctor Moreau Island is a science fiction novel written by H. G. Wells in 1896, introducing ideas of society and community, human nature and identity, playing God and Darwinism.
The plot begins when the protagonist, an upper-class gentleman named Edward Prendick, is shipwrecked in the ocean. A passing ship takes him aboard, where a doctor named Montgomery resuscitates him. Montgomery tells Prendick that they are heading to an unnamed island where he works, and that the ship's animals travel with him.
After unloading the animals from the ship, they take Prendick to an outside room of the enclosure in which they live. Prendick is very curious about the exact nature of Moreau's research on the island, especially after he is prevented from accessing the interior of the enclosure without explaining why. Prendick suddenly remembers that he had heard of Moreau, who had been an eminent physiologist in London before a journalist presented his horrifying vivisection experiments.
When the novel was written at the end of the 19th century, the scientific community in the United Kingdom was mired in debates about the vivisection of animals. Even certain interest groups formed, to address the issue, the "British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection", constituted two years after the publication of the novel. The novel received harsh criticism for the journalism of the time, being described as "morbid" and "sensationalist", accused of offending the "decency" and "common sense" of society.
