It was a "modern" fortress, suitable for facing the new strategies of the so-called wars of movement, the construction of which began in 1552.
The construction of the defense structure was requested by the Genoese to the emperor Charles V, engaged with his troops against those of the French king Henry II and financed with imperial funds and extraordinary taxes on the population of the Marquisate of Ceva.
