This is a large dome optical planetarium "Universalium IX (9) type" manufactured by Carl Zeiss of Germany. It has been active at the Nagoya City Science Museum since March 2011.

A sphere called the Star Ball projects images of 9,100 stars, nebulas, star clusters, and constellations that can be seen with the naked eye. The light from the LED light source (updated in 2018) is guided through an optical fiber to the hole in the stellar plate, allowing efficient use of the light from the light source. This makes it possible to reproduce sharp and bright star images that are close to the original stars. You can also make all the stars twinkle in a pattern that is close to natural.

Eight planetary projectors project the planets, sun, and moon whose positions change daily. In addition to the movements of the planets and the phases of the moon, you can also reproduce solar and lunar eclipses.
