Ahn Junggeun is a national hero who informed the world that national spirit in Korea are alive because of the invasion of Japan and the destruction of the nation, Ito Hirobumi which was the symbol of the imperialist aggression at the Harbin station on October 26, 1909. Although Ahn Junggeun, one of the nation’s foremost independence fighters, died a martyr after being executed by the Japanese aggressors at Lushun Prison in March 1910.

The Ahn Junggeun Memorial Museum first opened to the public on October 26, 1970. It was built on what was formerly the Joseon Shrine, a stark reminder of the Japanese colonial period, in order to help lift the downtrodden national spirits. The present museum building was built in 2010 at the same location to mark the 100th anniversary of Ahn Jung-geun’s death. The new building is made up of twelve columns symbolizing the twelve members of the Dongui-danji-hoe, a secret organization set up by Ahn. The museum consists of three main exhibition halls, each displaying Ahn’s belongings and materials in chronological order from his birth to his death.
