Les miserables is a novel by French politician, poet and writer Victor Hugo published in 1862, considered one of the most important works of the nineteenth century. The novel, in a romantic style, raises through its argument a reasoning about good and evil, about law, politics, ethics, justice and religion. It is divided into five volumes.

The first volume revolves around Fantine. A beautiful woman who falls passionately in love with Félix Tholomyès, who quickly abandons her after fathering a daughter, Cosette. The only wish in Fantine's life is to keep Cosette alive and for that I tend to work in the factory of Mayor Madeleine (also known as Jean Valjean) in Montreuil. There a person is in charge of writing letters to the Thénardier (who take care of their daughter) for her, because she is illiterate. However, she does not know that the Thénardiers badly mistreat Cosette and force her to be a slave in her inn. Nor does he know that the letters sent to him asking for financial help for Cosette are a misleading way to take money from him.

The author confessed that he had been inspired by Vidocq, a French criminal who redeemed himself and eventually inaugurated the French National Police, to create the two protagonists and that the history of his country had inspired him to place the historical context: therefore, the characters They live the June Rebellion (1832) and subsequent political changes. In addition, the author analyzes the stereotypes of that moment and shows his opposition to the death penalty.
