Macbeth is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been first performed in 1606.2 It dramatizes the damaging effects, physical and psychological, of political ambition on those who seek power for themselves. Of all the plays Shakespeare wrote during the reign of James I, who was patron of Shakespeare's theatrical troupe, Macbeth is the one that most clearly reflects on the playwright's relationship with his sovereign.3 It was first published in the Folio de 1623, possibly from a prompt book, and it is his shortest tragedy.

The play is loosely based on the account of the life of a historical figure, Macbeth, who was king of the Scots between 1040 and 1057. Shakespeare's primary source for this tragedy was the Holinshed Chronicles, from which he also drew the arguments of his historical works. Raphael Holinshed was based in turn on Historia Gentis Scotorum (History of the Scots), a work written in Latin by Scottish author Hector Boece and first printed in Paris in 1527. To please his patron, King James V of Scotland , Boece had deliberately obscured the figure of Macbeth, in order to exalt a hypothetical ancestor of the king, Banquo.

There is no absolute certainty that the tragedy is entirely the work of Shakespeare, as some claim that certain passages could be later additions to the playwright Thomas Middleton, whose play The Witch has multiple affinities with Macbeth.
