The Green Belt App is a multimedia tool that offers people guidance and support along the entire length of the former inner-German border. The outdoor application also serves as a navigation aid and educational tool.
On a route of 1,393 kilometres - from Prex on the Czech border to Priwall on the Baltic Sea - it leads along existing hiking trails and tells the story of the division of Germany, its effects on people and the development of the border region into the largest contiguous natural biotope in Germany at over 850 stations.
The app is based on the successful and established berlinHistory app, which was developed by the non-profit organisation berlinHistory e.V. under a white label licence to make historical traces visible in a contemporary digital application.
Since September 2022, the association has been working together with various cooperation partners - including the Thuringia Foundation for Nature Conservation, the Saxon State Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, BUND and many other stakeholders - to comprehensively record places, landscapes and stories on both sides of the former demarcation line. So far, numerous places have been visited, documented photographically and prepared with texts and geodata.
