Fate/Zero is a light novel published by TYPE-MOON (labeled TYPE-MOON BOOKS) and written by Gen Urobuchi of Nitroplus. Character design and illustration by Takashi Takeuchi of TYPE-MOON. This is the first collaboration between TYPE-MOON and Nitroplus.

A spin-off of TYPE-MOON's novel game "Fate/stay night" (hereinafter referred to as SN), the details of the "Fourth Holy Grail War", which was fragmentary in SN as an event that happened 10 years ago, are explained to the characters of SN. It will be a prequel that focuses on people one generation before us. The setting created by Kinoko Nasu, who was in charge of the SN scenario, is written in a way that Urobuchi takes over, and the questions that were ambiguous in SN are also collected as hints.
