A joint development initiative of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID), SERVIR works in partnership with leading regional organizations world-wide to help developing countries use information provided by Earth observing satellites and geospatial technologies for managing climate risks and land use. We empower decision-makers with tools, products, and services to act locally on climate-sensitive issues such as disasters, agriculture, water, and ecosystems and land use.
SERVIR is improving awareness, increasing access to information, and supporting analysis to help people in Africa, Hindu Kush-Himalaya, Lower Mekong, and Mesoamerica manage challenges in the areas of food security, water resources, land use change, and natural disasters. With activities in more than 45 countries and counting, SERVIR has already developed over 70 custom tools, collaborated with over 250 institutions, and trained more than 3000 individuals, improving the capacity to develop local solutions. SERVIR has a large, diverse collection of user-tailored applications and tools that use Earth observations and NASA data to inform resilient development in various regions in a number of thematic areas.
The SERVEO (meaning SERVIR Earth Observation) application is developed using remote sensing data found within Google Earth Engine. Remote sensing is an important tool to help predict, model, or infer surface processes worldwide. This project uses a Google Earth Engine gateway (gee-gateway) in conjunction with Landsat 4, 5, 7, and 8 to display data over time as well as an image displaying the average. The indices used in this application are the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and a 2-band EVI (EVI2). The study areas and date range are dependent upon the user’s desired location and dates of interest.
