Ulan Bator (Улааанбаатар), also Ulan Bator or simply just UB, is the capital of Mongolia. With a population of around 1.2 million, it is also the largest city in Mongolia.
Ulaanbaatar is located in the Tuul River Valley, bordering the Bogd Khan Uul National Park. Initially a Buddhist nomadic center, it became a permanent settlement in the 18th century. The Soviet occupation in the 20th century led to a religious purge. The hallmarks of the city as we see it today are Soviet-era buildings, museums with intact monasteries, and a vibrant blend of traditional and contemporary lifestyles.
