Oliver Twist is the second novel by English author Charles Dickens. It was originally published as a monthly serial novel in Bentley's Miscellany magazine, directed by Dickens himself, between February 1837 and April 1839.
It is the first novel in the English language to have a child as the protagonist, and it stands out for its treatment of the world of criminals and their sordid lives, practically devoid of Romanticism. Oliver Twist is one of the first social novels in the history of literature, as it draws its readers' attention to various social ills of the time, such as child labor or the use of children to commit crimes. Dickens scoffs at the hypocrisy of his day by treating these serious subjects with sarcasm and dark humor.
The novel may have been inspired by the story of Robert Blincoe, an orphan whose account of the toughness of his life as a child laborer in a cotton mill was widely circulated in the 1830s.
