Every language is a window into a given civilization. To know a language is to connect with its civilization, to experience its culture.
In Burkina Faso, there are more than sixty ethnic groups, each with its own language. The Vigué are one of these ethnic groups, and Viémon is their spoken language. They are a people of the southwest, in the Guiriko region, about 55 km from Bobo Dioulasso. Numbering a few tens of thousands, the Vigué are welcoming and have managed to remain true to their heritage by preserving their language despite the rural exodus of other ethnic groups who have settled there.
Who can learn Viémon?
Anyone who wants to learn it is welcome. In particular, for all Vigué children who grew up outside the Karankasso-Vigué region and don't speak Viémon, this app is for you!
Why learn Viémon?
In Africa, it is perfectly natural for every child from a particular ethnic group to speak or understand that group's language. Therefore, a child who previously didn't know Viémon can, through this application, learn to speak, read, and write it, thus connecting with other Vigué people.
Learning Viémon will undoubtedly allow the learner to become rooted in Vigué culture!
