Written in 391 AD, this treatise of St. Ambrose might be entitled "Concerning Christian Virtues" as it offers a whole bouquet of Christian virtues. St. Ambrose, esteeming highly the dignity of the ministerial office, was desirous that the clergy in his diocese should live in a manner worthy of their high vocation, being good, profitable examples to the people. The language of the book is eloquent, the style is noble, the thought abundant in imagery, and the philosophical and moral contents - pithy, fragrant.
