Thomas Aquinas (1225 - 1274), theologian and catholic philosopher belonging to the Order of Preachers, is considered the main representative of scholastic teaching and one of the greatest figures of systematic theology3. In terms of metaphysics, his work represents one of the most cited sources of the thirteenth century as well as being a point of reference for schools of Thomistic and neotomist thought. The Catholic Church names him Angelic Doctor, Common Doctor and Doctor of Humanity and considers his fundamental work for the studies of philosophy and theology.
Canonized in 1323, he was declared Doctor of the Church in 1567 and patron saint of Catholic universities and study centers in 1880. His feast is celebrated on January 28.
