It is called Catena Aurea the work that results from collecting writings of the "Fathers of the Church", following the full texts of the Gospels, by way of exposition or commentary.

Among the various catenas that were made in the Middle Ages, one of the best known is that made by Saint Thomas Aquinas (13th century).

Thomas Aquinas (1225 - 1274), a Catholic theologian and philosopher belonging to the Order of Preachers, is considered the main representative of scholastic teaching and one of the greatest figures in systematic theology. Canonized in 1323, he was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1567 and a patron saint of Catholic universities and study centers in 1880.
