A proverb is a general language formula containing a morality, an expression of popular wisdom or a truth of experience that is considered useful to recall. It is not attributed to an author, (contrary to the quote or the apophtegma): the proverbs are often very old, of popular origin and consequently of oral transmission. They serve as an argument of authority. Their use in the framework of an argument can thus reach sophistry.
Some proverbs contradict others, depending on the virtue advocated, for example audacity or prudence.
The proverb is not necessarily incisive or hard-hitting, it can be banal, but it is especially generic / of general scope. It is fixed in language (it forms an autonomous block) but can contain variants. Simple and fast, it is often imaged, metaphorical, but not always.
