Japan has a rich musical culture that includes a varied palette of traditional styles. Traditional Japanese music is known as hōgaku, while the word ongaku refers to music in general.
Two of the oldest styles are shōmyō, or "clear voice" and gagaku or orchestral court music. Both styles come from the Nara and Heian periods.
Gagaku is a type of classical music that has been performed in the Imperial Court since the Heian period. Kagurauta, Azumaasobi and Yamatouta are relatively indigenous repertoires. Tōgaku and Komagaku originated from the Tang Chinese dynasty by transmission through the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the gagaku is divided into kangen (instrumental music) and bugaku (dance accompanied by gagaku).
Japanese folk songs can be classified in different ways, in general four main categories are distinguished: songs about work, religious songs (such as sato kagura, a type of Shinto music), songs for events such as weddings, funerals and festivals ( matsuri, especially Obon), and songs for children (warabe uta).
Samurai often listened to and took part in the performance of musical activities as part of their practices to enrich their lives and knowledge.
Since the medieval era, blind women who were musicians, called goze, also roamed the fields, singing songs and playing music accompanied by a small drum. From the seventeenth century they played the koto or the shamisen. Goze organizations spread throughout the region, and until very recently existed in what is now the Niigata prefecture.
