SEPIA is a mobile application developed as part of a research project conducted by the Instituto de Saúde Pública of the University of Porto, which aims to assess different dimensions of individual pain experiences. The project combines data from a large birth cohort (Generation XXI) with data from patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The app is called SEPIA because the name of the project in English is Studying Experiences of Pain In Adolescents.

Over 6 to 9 months, we provide questionnaires related to various dimensions of pain and the way we experience it. The first questionnaire will be available once the application has been downloaded and participation has been accepted. Every time a quiz is completed, a new quiz is unlocked. The last questionnaire will be unlocked up to 6 months after the first one is completed.
These questionnaires will help us to identify key features of pain experiences during childhood and adolescence that are important in the development of prolonged musculoskeletal pain in the transition to adulthood. This knowledge is important for us to know how to best prevent physical suffering and ensure lifelong well-being.
