Metropolitan Dimitry of Rostov (in the world Daniel Savich Tuptalo; 1651 - 1709) - Russian church leader, Bishop of the Russian Orthodox Church; spiritual writer, preacher. In 1757, the glorified among the saints of the Russian Orthodox Church; the memory of September 21 (Julian calendar) and on the day of the Council Siberian Saints (June 10). Dimitry of Rostov became famous as a fruitful church author - compiler of collections of the lives of saints (most famously, in four books - "Lives of the Saints"). Work on the lives of the saints was launched May 6 1684 and lasted for 20 years.
 
Life - a genre of religious literature, which describes the life and deeds of the saints. Life was created after the death of the saint, but not always, after the formal canonization. For the lives characterized by stringent substantive and structural constraints (canon, literary etiquette), it is very different from the secular biographies.
