The date of the beginning of the history of the United States of America is a matter of debate among historians. The oldest textbooks begin with the arrival of Christopher Columbus on October 12, 1492 or begin around 1600. In recent decades, American schools and universities have moved back in time to include more information from the colonial period and much more of the prehistory of the Native Americans.
