Conscious presence has been used as a method in outpatient care in the western world since the late seventies as part of treatment programs against e.g. stress and difficulty sleeping. When we direct our focus towards things that we can experience with our senses, we create a break from thoughts and feelings that, when they have free rein, can give rise to stress, anxiety and tension in the body. This deliberate directing of our attention activates the body's peace and quiet system, which we can feel e.g. by lowering the heart rate and lowering the blood pressure. Research also shows effects such as a stronger immune system and improved sleep. This exercise thus gives purely chemical effects in the body and a short time a day is enough to make a difference.
Regular practice in conscious presence also gives us in the long run the tools to live more consciously and, through acquired insights, make more conscious choices in our lives. It is the stillness, the silence, that gives us the opportunity to listen inwardly, to the body and mind, and hear what the body wants to convey. Maybe we all need to stop, slow down and breathe.
