九十年代，針對腎病病友的復康及心理支援服務較為匱乏，有見及此，一群熱心的醫護人員、社工及院牧於 1993 年發起成立「伊利沙伯腎科互助小組」，並於 1994 年正式註冊成為「伊利沙伯醫院腎友互助會」。
