మొదటిగా విష్ణు సహస్ర నామ స్తోత్రము మహాభారతం లోని అనుశాసనిక పర్వంలో 149వ అధ్యాయంలో ఉంది. కురుక్షేత్ర యుద్ధానంతరం అంపశయ్య మీద ఉన్న భీష్ముడు ఈ స్తోత్రాన్ని యుధిష్ఠిరునకు (ధర్మరాజుకు) ఉపదేశిస్తాడు. ఈ స్తోత్ర పారాయణం సకల వాంఛితార్థ ఫలదాయకమని ప్రతీతి. స్తోత్రం ఉత్తర పీఠిక (ఫలశ్రుతి) లో ఈ శ్లోకం "ధర్మార్థులకు ధర్మము, అర్థార్థులకు అర్థము, కామార్థులకు కామము, ప్రజార్థులకు ప్రజను ప్రసాదించును" అని చెప్పబడింది.
