▶ RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner operated by the White Star Line that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning hours of 15 April 1912. Titanic received six warnings of sea ice on 14 April but was traveling about 22 knots when her lookouts sighted the iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City at around 23:40 (ship's time) on Sunday. Unable to turn quickly enough, ended by striking an iceberg.
▶ The ship suffered a glancing blow that buckled her starboard side and opened six of her sixteen compartments to the sea and Sank two hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 (ship's time; 05:18 GMT) on Monday, 15 April. Titanic had been designed to stay afloat with four of her forward compartments flooded but no more, and the crew soon realized that the ship would sink.
▶ The largest ocean liner in service at the time. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died and 700 people survive, making the sinking one of modern history's deadliest peacetime commercial marine disasters.
▶ RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time she entered service and was the second of three Olympic-class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line. She was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Thomas Andrews, chief naval architect of the shipyard at the time, died in the disaster.
