The Ch’orti’ Language Phonemic Keyboard
The Ch’orti’ language keyboard builds upon the principles implemented in Dr. Eladio Mateo Toledo’s “Digital Phonemic Keyboard Project for Mayan Languages.” It was developed with the support of a team of Ch’orti’ speakers (see names in credits). The keyboards adopt a Mayan perspective on diversity (common features are treated the same, while features specific to each language are treated differently); they follow the language’s writing norms; they are inclusive (the lexicon includes dialectal variants with standardized spelling); and they incorporate linguistic research on the language. The keyboards contribute to literacy, reading and writing skills, alphabet instruction, and other educational opportunities in Mayan languages.
