The K’iche’ language keyboard builds upon the principles implemented in Dr. Eladio Mateo Toledo’s “Phonemic Digital Keyboard Project for Mayan Languages.” It was developed with the support of a team of K’iche’ speakers (see names in credits). The keyboards adopt a Mayan perspective on diversity (common features are treated the same, while features specific to each language are treated differently); they follow the language’s writing norms; they are inclusive (the lexicon includes dialectal variants with standardized spelling); and they incorporate linguistic research on the language. The keyboards contribute to literacy, reading and writing skills, alphabet instruction, and other educational opportunities in Mayan languages.
