Pizza 1 2 3 is a serious educational game designed to introduce students to fractions. The game has been designed based on the Ontario Math curriculum (2020), sections B1.5, B1.6 and B1.7; however, it correlates with math curriculums in different provinces, territories, and countries. Teachers can use the game at the beginning of their lesson to give students an introduction to topics or at the end to strengthen their knowledge. Teachers can track the student’s progress and evaluate each individual’s understanding with our custom evaluation and progress-tracking software.
The game is an introduction to fractions. The game starts off with a basic lesson about fractions and then tests the student’s knowledge of the concepts. For example, in one part of the lesson, students are taught that fractions are represented by a numerator and denominator. They are then tasked with identifying the numerator and denominator of different fractions, i.e., ½ or ¼. Once the students demonstrate an understanding of the various concepts, they move on to the game portion. Here, they will be tasked with identifying the correct fraction for customers.
By the end of the game, students should be able to:
explain that a fraction represents a part of a whole
describe situations in which fractions are used
explain the role of the numerator and denominator in a fraction.
identify different fractions and what they represent
name common fractions, i.e., ½ is a half and 1/3 is a third
