With these statistical tests doctors can assess the relative risk of a clinical event related to a specific risk factor in prospective and retrospective studies; the quality of a diagnostic test, its specificity and sensitivity, and finally the evaluation of absolute and relative risk with their reduction under the influence of treatment, and the number of patients to treat in order to prevent an adverse event.

Life tables are used, in clinical studies or trials, to know the survival data of a cohort of patients.
In particular the number of patients alive and under observation at the beginning of each year. The number dying in each year and the number lost to follow-up each year.
But above all, the cumulative probabilities of survival from the beginning of the study to the end of each year.
