Marine Fauna Sightings is designed to allow all water users to digitally submit their sightings of some marine fauna (e.g. whales and seals) off the Australian coast. Despite the iconic nature of much of Australia’s marine mega-fauna (large marine animals), there is still much to be learnt, particularly regarding their range, abundance and movement patterns.
Your sightings of marine mega-fauna, combined with sightings from other users, will give us a much better understanding of where and when different species occur or move along our coast, and their behaviour patterns. This information will greatly assist us in protecting these important species that frequent and sometimes migrate through our coastal waters, and it will help governments to provide better management information to the fishing industry and other marine industries.
Marine Fauna Sightings also provides information to assist you in identifying some marine mega-fauna you might see. Details on each species are included in the ‘Species’ page, or can be seen when creating a sighting report by tapping the right arrow on the species you think you may have seen. There are photos and diagrams to assist you, as well as some interesting information each species.
