Mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' is being chanted by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (The Art of Living). This mantra is considered very auspicious and one of the most powerful mantras. There are two variants in the application: 1) slow chanting and 2) chanting quickly (108 times).
The Slow chanting contains a fragment of 43 seconds duration, which is played in a loop. You can choose the count of loops (i.e. total duration). It is slow chanting pranayama: we are doing only three breaths per 43 seconds for the whole cycle of slow chanting (usually we do about 10 breaths for this interval). This technique (Mantra-Pranayama) allows you to relax your mind. Quick chanting is usually doing 108 times, it takes 10 minutes.
Usually the mantra is chanted for several minutes (10-15 minutes), and then for some time we sit in silence and meditate (10-20 minutes). About the benefits of meditation and basic guided meditations, see Sri Sri Meditations .
Note. This practice, like any other yoga practices, is recommended to learn and do under the guidance of a Guru (teacher). If you are not trained in chanting mantras or not passed the 'The Art of Living' programs, it is proposed to find a Guru (teacher) at first and pass training programs.
