The first National Women’s Day celebrations were held on 28 February 1909 in the United States to commemorate the year before the New York garment workers strike against poor working conditions. In 1910, the Socialist International in Copenhagen, established around the world celebrated Women’s Day, which had used the idea of promoting women’s rights and to build public support for universal suffrage for women.
